Static vs Dynamic ADAS Calibration

There are two ways to calibrate a windscreen camera: static and dynamic. Which one your car needs is not a choice the repairer makes. The vehicle manufacturer specifies it, and some vehicles need both.

Key points
  • Static calibration is done with the vehicle parked in front of targets, in a workshop.
  • Dynamic calibration is done by driving the vehicle on well-marked roads.
  • The manufacturer specifies which your vehicle needs, and some need both.

Static calibration

The vehicle stays still. Calibration targets are set up in front of it at distances and heights measured to the manufacturer's figures, and a scan tool takes the camera through the procedure while it looks at them.

Static calibration needs a level floor, enough clear space in front of the vehicle and steady lighting, so it is done in a workshop. The vehicle also has to sit the way the manufacturer expects: tyres at the correct pressure and nothing heavy in the boot, because anything that changes how the car sits changes where the camera points.

Dynamic calibration

The vehicle is driven. A scan tool puts the camera into calibration mode, and the technician drives on roads with clear lane markings at a steady speed while the camera relearns its position. The drive continues until the system reports that it has finished.

Dynamic calibration depends on conditions. It needs well-marked roads, fair weather and traffic that allows a steady speed.

At a glance

  • Static

    • Where: in a workshop

    • How: parked in front of measured targets

    • Needs: a level floor, clear space and steady lighting

  • Dynamic

    • Where: on the road, starting from your location

    • How: driven with a scan tool connected

    • Needs: clear lane markings, a steady speed and fair weather

Why some vehicles need both

Some manufacturers specify a static procedure followed by a dynamic drive. The static step sets the camera's aim, and the drive confirms it on a real road.

Is one better than the other?

No. They are different procedures for different systems, and using the one the manufacturer specifies is what makes the calibration valid. A dynamic drive is not a substitute for a static procedure on a vehicle that requires one.

What it means for your booking

  • A vehicle that needs dynamic calibration can usually be done from your home or workplace, straight after the windscreen is fitted.

  • A vehicle that needs static calibration is booked into our Warwick Farm workshop.

  • We tell you which applies when we quote, from your rego or VIN.
